INTRO MUSIC FULL POT AND UNDER

MUSIC BED; MIC FULL POT

You’re listening to Titan Radio News, broadcasting from the campus of Cal State Fullerton. Today is Saturday, September first 2007.

MUSIC OUT

I’m Peter Martinez. Here are some of today’s top headlines. /

STORY 1

Idaho Senator Larry Craig resigned today over a men’s room sex sting, bowing to pressure from fellow Republicans worried about a scandal dimming their election prospects.

Craig’s resignation completed a stunning downfall that began last Monday with the disclosure that he had pleaded guilty to a reduced charge following his arrest during a sex sting in a Minneapolis airport men’s room.

Although leading members of his own party had called for him to step down, Craig resisted resigning for days, contending that he had done nothing wrong and that his only mistake was pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge.

He said that the people of Idaho deserve a senator who can devote one-hundred percent of his time and effort to the critical issues of our state and of our nation. His resignation goes into effect at the end of this month.

STORY 2

In local news // The numbers were chosen last night for the three-hundred and thirty million dollar jackpot in the Mega Millions lottery.

Four winners matched all five numbers and the mega number, sharing a lump-sum more than one-hundred and ninety four million dollars after taxes. The winners are from Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey, and Texas.

Some other 36 tickets matched only five numbers but not the mega number.

They’ll be taking home the second-prize money valued at two-hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

One lottery official says that the odds are probably better that you’d get hit by lightning // repeatedly // than winning the ultimate jackpot.

Just in case you haven’t checked, the winning numbers from Friday’s drawing are 8 / 18 / 22 / 40 / 44 and mega number 11.

STORY 3

Meanwhile, here in Fullerton, students will need to hit it big in order to afford tuition. A ten percent increase is on its way next fall, according to the Daily Titan newspaper. This is the sixth time in seven years that students should prepare for a bump in tuition.

The California State budget was passed early last week and the state deficit left no choice but to put the burden on students.

Keep it here, we’ll have reaction from Fullerton students in our next report.

SPORTS

Some breaking sports news from Cal State Fullerton. The Daily Titan newspaper reports that veteran baseball head Coach George Horton has accepted a coaching position with the University of Oregon Ducks.

Neither Cal State Fullerton or the University of Oregon would confirm the report, but the list of prospective coaches for the Duck's new baseball team is short.

Horton spent eleven seasons with the Titans, including a 2004 national title.

WEATHER

Fullerton weather right now is 97 degrees and will continue to be hot during the Labor Day weekend. Maybe we’ll see some relief this Wednesday when the high temperature is 81 degrees with sunny and patchy clouds.

GOODBYE

And that’s all for now. Stay tuned for our next report and whenever news breaks. I’m Peter Martinez, and you’ve been listening to Titan Radio News.
