Martinez has been involved at CSUF since his freshman year. As a broadcast journalist, he worked at Titan Communications, the on-campus television studio, where he produced an award-winning newscast called On the Edge. He also produced other programming for the University, and was an on-air correspondent for World Press – a television show that monitors press freedom issues around the world
Each summer Martinez learned how to create quality news packages with high production standards. The internship was sponsored byProxy-Connection: keep-alive Cache-Control: max-age=0 he Corporation for Public Broadcasting . At one of Cal State Fullerton’s Career and Internship Fairs, he was offered a first ever internship position with KABC’s website department. During Martinez’s sophomore year in 2006, he helped ABC7 Eyewitness News staff post video clips and breaking news to www.abc7.com . He also helped post multimedia content during the Oscars 2006 telecast.
Some of his clients include the CSUF Public Affairs Department, College of Business and Economics, and the College of Communications. The website www.rePetePro.com is home to all of Martinez’s work; more than 21,000 visitors have logged on to rePeteProductions. In late 2007, KCET and CSUF created an exclusive media partnership; a match made in heaven since Martinez has been heavily involved with both institutions. One of the KCET/CSUF initiatives is to create a digital channel with programs targeted to the Orange County community. The result is an issues-driven television show called OC Insight – produced by one of Martinez’s broadcast professors and advisor, Dr. Brent Foster. With years of professional television experience at Life & Times and hands-on production experience with Titan Communications and rePeteProductions, Martinez was hired to be a field producer and videographer for OC Insight. Four packages were made and inserted into the two episodes that were taped at the CSUF broadcast studio in March 2008. OC Insight premiered in early April on digital television and online at www.ocinsighttv.com . The next two episodes are in pre-production with a taping planned on May 9, 2008. In early April 2008, Martinez and a group of three Cal State Fullerton Communications students won a national $20,000 video news competition with the FOX News Channel – something they worked on during winter break in December 2007. The topic was about illegal aliens and whether they should stay or move them out. The video includes interviews with the Minuteman Project co-founder, a coyote, and a documented housekeeper. On-location taping included shots of the border fence in San Diego.
Along with the monetary prize, FOX News also included an all expense paid trip to New York to appear on FOX & Friends as well as an interview for an entry-level position with the network.
As the group’s main videographer and editor, Martinez put into use some of the shooting and editing techniques he learned during his KCET / Life & Times internship. Brent Foster, the group’s advisor, provided valuable feedback during the post-production process. Also, Martinez will have the opportunity to research, write, learn control room and studio skills, and learn how to shoot and edit. During the summer, Martinez will be able to participate in several news division wide learning seminars during the fellowship.
His future career lay in the hands of an ever-changing media industry, where Martinez wants to become a local news reporter, video journalist, or an online/digital correspondent. Maybe one day he’ll be running a newsroom! With graduation quickly approaching, Martinez is proud to know that he’ll be joining other Titan Alumni like Vikki Vargas: the Orange County Bureau Chief for NBC4 Los Angeles.
